Fruit trees are always popular amongst birders, as these are often a great show with a variety of birds feeding, some species early in the morning and others later in the day, with some birds coming and going.

It is important to know what species enjoy what type of fruit, and plan around this to ensure maximum exposure of the fruit eating birds to the potential tourist. Some research will need to be done here, and the registers at the hides will assist us a great deal here.

Some fruit trees will have their own hides which may not really be fully utalised through out the year, though nesting may take place in some fruit trees when the fruit is out of season, and these hides may be used then to observe nesting habits.

Wild figs are the most common indigenous fruit trees in this region,  guavas may also be considered as extremely popular during their season. Pawpaws are also a common fruit which birds really enjoy in this region.  Locating the hide nearby these trees will always be a plus factor.

Special thanx to Kenneth Newman for his great book Newman's Birds of Southern Africa which has inspired many keen birders over the years. Special thanx to SAPPI  for their sponsorship of Newman's Birds of Southern Africa (7th Edition)    Contact iSimangaliso Birding Route by e-mail
